From the moment I stepped foot on the vineyard, I was captivated by the warm and inviting atmosphere, accompanied by an incredible staff team.
Modales is more than just a winery; it’s an immersive experience that combines breathtaking surroundings, delightful wines, and a strong sense of community.

Vineyard Atmosphere: A Sanctuary of Tranquility
As I arrived at Modales, I was immediately struck by the seamless fusion of indoor and outdoor spaces.
The winery exudes an air of openness, allowing visitors to feel as though they are sitting right next to the sprawling vineyard.
The outdoor area is a delightful haven, featuring ample seating, engaging activities like Corn Hole, and an ambiance that effortlessly blends with the vineyard’s natural beauty. Live music fills the air, enhancing the already enchanting atmosphere.
I found myself lost in the serenity, taking in the scenic views and embracing the vineyard’s tranquil charm.
Modales’ Commitment to the Land:
In 2016, Modales acquired 75 acres of farmland, aptly named La Gracia, with a mission to craft quality Michigan wines while restoring the land to its former glory. With the expertise of winemaker Andrew Backlin, who previously honed his skills at esteemed wineries like Steele Wines and Duckhorn, Modales embarked on an ambitious journey.
Breaking ground for the production site and winery, they opened their doors to the public in 2019, showcasing their commitment to both sustainability and exceptional winemaking.

2022 Sauvignon Blanc:
The Sauvignon Blanc captivated my palate with its earthy, grassy notes harmoniously balanced with fruit and herbs. With a refreshing and easy-to-drink quality, this wine left a lasting impression. It’s no surprise that it received the prestigious title of Best of Class White Wine at the 2023 Michigan Governor’s Cup.
Sparkling Wine – 2020 Cremant De La Esperanza:
This delightful sparkling wine, sourced from the La Esperanza Vineyard, offered a tantalizing bouquet with notes of lemon zest, herbs, and a touch of earthiness. Crafted with 100% estate-grown grapes, it delighted my senses with its effervescence, long-lasting flavors, and sharp scent.
2022 Pinot Gris:
With its exquisite sunset salmon hue, the Pinot Gris showcased its artistry from the moment it was poured. Having undergone 12 hours of skin contact, it revealed hints of ginger and light strawberry, culminating in a well-rounded, artisanal wine. This creation perfectly embodies Modales’ adventurous spirit and their dedication to crafting fun and exceptional wines for any occasion.
2022 Contact:
Among all the remarkable wines I sampled at Modales, Contact claimed the crown as my personal favorite. Its vibrant orange-amber appearance and fruity allure made it instantly captivating. Native fermentation and estate-grown grapes from Fennville contributed to its allure. The label’s illustration by Mikayla Brown from Grand Rapids, Michigan, perfectly captured the essence of this wine. Contact’s earthy tones, zesty flavors, and subtle hints of clove, sandalwood, and sourdough made it an unforgettable summer wine. The fact that you can find this gem at the three prominent Meijer locations in Grand Rapids is an added bonus.
2021 El Suelo:
This deep ruby red wine begged to be enjoyed at room temperature. With each sip, it unveiled a symphony of flavors, including earthy tones, deep fruitiness, and hints of cherry and strawberry. Spending a month in a wooden barrel before transitioning to steel, El Suelo offered a harmonious balance and a lingering, gratifying finish.
2022 Cabernet Franc:
Dressed in a deep ruby red robe with a subtle pink tint, the Cabernet Franc unleashed its aromatic prowess. Hints of raspberry danced on my palate, supported by a full-bodied nature that set it apart from Wine #4. Sourced from their lakeside vineyard, this wine captivated with its extended flavors, balanced acidity, and delicate notes of dried sage.
2020 Pasas (raisins):
This orange-tinted wine, crafted from a blend of Vignoles and Vidal Blanc grapes, enchanted with its sweet, blush-like appearance. Though dessert wines are not typically my go-to, I found myself smitten by Pasas. Dry-aged for 30 days, it delivered a beautifully sweet taste with hints of apricot and tropical notes, accompanied by a delicate touch of honeysuckle.
